A.  Film Photography

1.  Expose film using the hints.  Topic:  unusual angles or views. 

2.  Label your negs so you can find them, and make a contact print.  

3.  Select the best photo(s) to enlarge.  Make a test strip.

4.  Label the back of the final enlargement with your name, neg sleeve page number, and time exposed in the darkroom.  

5.  Be prepared to present one of your photos at the critique.  

 

 

B.  Digital  

1.  Thinking about the chapter in the text section, make photos of unusual objects. 

2.  In your binder write a paragraph describing your favorite new digital photo.  Print  it at home.

 

 

C.  Text

1.  Read Exploring Photography, ch.12.  Make notes of each idea for photographing objects.  Indicate specific ways to do so for each.

2.  Shoot photos using ideas the chapter gives you for section A using film and digital.

 

 

D.  Photo History

1.   Look for information about Mathew Brady in the History of Photography text.  (Do NOT use Wikipedia.)

2.  Draw 3 of his photos in your binder.

3.  Write a paragraph that explains what kinds of photos he took and what we can learn from his work.  What about his photos shocked viewers?

           

 

           E.  Sketchbook

1.  Cut a piece of 12” X18” drawing paper into two 12” X 9” pieces.

2.  Use the two pieces as mats.  Practice matting  a photo on each one.   (Use photos that are not your favorite to practice.)

  2. Label your negs so you can find them, and make a contact print.  
  3. Select the best photo(s) to enlarge.  Show me.
  4. Label the back of the final enlargement with your name, neg sleeve page number, and time exposed in the darkroom.  
  5. Be prepared to present your work at the critique. 
B.  Digital  
  1. Photograph any subject that interests YOU. 
  2. Focus on composing (framing) your photos. 
  3. Select the best composition to present at critique.  Print it at home, if possible.

 C.  Text

  1.  Check out a Photo Assessment Test from me.
  2. Write each question as a true statement as you answer it in your B.  Return the test.  
  3. Find the correct answer if you do not know it.  

 D.  Photo History

  1. Look for information about Henry P. Robinson in the History of Photography text.  IF you use the internet, use Masters of Photography, NOT Wikipedia for information, please.
  2. Draw two of his photos in your binder.
  3. Write a paragraph that explains what kinds of photos he took and what we can learn from the work.
E.  Sketchbook
  1. Read Photographic Eye, pp. 64 and pp. 253 (left) and pp.254-255, Matting and Hanging a Show.
  2. List the steps to mat a photo in your binder.  
  3. Cut out a 4X6” paper rectangle.  Use the steps to center it on a SB page.
  4. Cut a piece of 12X18” drawing paper into two 11X14” pieces.
  5. Use these pieces to practice matting two of your photos that will NOT be in our show (a less than perfect print.)

  1. Read Introduction to Photography, pp. 91 – 93 ( bottom ).
  2. Outline important facts. Define new words in your binder.
  3. Read the handout about aperture settings. Put it in your B.
  4. Write five facts that you learn from this information.

Critique of photos will be on Friday, _____

A. Film Photographs:  

Get ready for the trip to Deering:  film, batteries.

1. Expose film mindful of framing each shot for good composition.  Check the edges of the frame before you release the shutter.  Use “getting started”.  Practice rolling film with eyes closed again.

2. Develop the roll.

3. Sleeve the negatives.  Label neg. sleeves: name, date subject.

B. Digital

1. Take 10 photos mindful of framing each one.  Print out your 2 favorite at home for critique.  Look for exciting color in your subject.  Frame photos with care.

C. Text

1. Read A Short Course In Photography, pp. 100-115.  Outline what you have read in your binder.

2. Review the names of parts of an enlarger.

3. Reread Snapshots vs Photographs in Photographic Eye, p. 51.

4. In Exploring Photography workbook, pp.61-62, write Q and A.

D. Photo History

1. Look up Charles Negre in the History of Photography.

2. Write a summary of what he did that was so important for photography.  Tell how he did it?  Include b/d dates, location.

1. Explore another roll of film looking for distinct shadow shapes in your frame.  Again, use “getting started” hints.

a. Practice rolling film on a reel with your eyes closed again.

b. Then go into a closet to roll two of your rolls of film on the reel.  Put both of them into the tank for processing

B. Digital

1. Take 20 photos that have distinct shadow shapes in them.  Print out your favorite at home for critique.  Show me the other 19.

C. Text

1. Read Photographic Eye, ch. 5, pp. 227-232 top.  Take notes in your binder.

2. Read Horenstein, 2nd ed., pp 75-85 (Xerox copies.).

a. Take notes for each step.

D. Photo History

1. Look up photographers Hill and Adamson in a text.

2. Write a summary of what they did that was so important for photography.  How did they did it?  Tell when they lived.

1. Rule off a 3cm border around a page in your SB.

2. Rest your relaxed hand on the table.  Draw everything you see.  Fill the page.  Use a range of values.  Draw only what you see.

A. Film Photographs:  Learning about light.

1. Load your camera with film.  Become very aware of light.

a. Print these “starting points” in a small font on your computer to attach to the back of your camera for reference.

b. Expose a new roll of film using these starting points.

2. Take your best pinhole photo into the darkroom.  Cut a half piece of new photo paper.  Place it, emulsion side up, under your best photo in the easel of the enlarger.  Be sure your photo is face down against the new paper’s emulsion.

3. Expose the papers for 2 seconds.  Develop the new photo paper in the chemicals.

4. Write a paragraph about what you did.  Write a paragraph about what resulted.

B. Digital

1. Take lots of photos about golden light, the light at the beginning and end of the day when the sun is at a low angle.

2. Print out your favorite at home to share at critique.

C. Text

1. Read Introduction to Photography, pp. 109-114, top left.  Take notes in your binder.

2. Read Photographic Eye, ch. 5, pp. 83-85, take notes.

D. Photo History

1. Look up Fox Talbot in a text.

2. In your binder write a summary of what he did that was so important for photography.  How did he do it?  Tell when he lived.

3. Make a careful 10 cm X 15cm drawing of one of his photos.

4. Organize your binder by assignment.  Write a title on each page.

E. Sketchbook

1. Carefully rule off a 2cm border around a page in your SB.

2. Make an artwork that uses only shapes.
